Does Namibia have the necessary regulations to manage ISL mining?
Up to date, Namibia lacks an independent, in-depth hydrogeological study required to assess these specific risks. We currently have no legislation in place regulating ISL mining.
Namibia should not consider applications based on inadequate environmental impact assessments.
What are Namibia’s international obligations regarding this water?
Namibia joined the UNECE Water Convention, commiting the nation to protecting transboundary water resources. If contamination reaches our neighbors in Botswana or South Africa, Namibia could face massive international legal liabilities and financial claims. Some of the Exclusive Prospecting Licenses for nuclear fuels, i.e. uranium, extend up to the Botswana border.
