FAQ
This comprehensive FAQ page addresses the most commonly asked questions SAUMA receives. The more technical questions and answers address the critical technical and socio-economic concerns raised during our recent webinar and the issues at the heart of in situ leach mining.

Is the water currently safe to drink?
Yes, baseline water quality outside of uranium ore bodies is currently safe and within international radiation limits. However, water found directly inside ore bodies is toxic and unsafe to drink. Mining would dramatically increase the level of toxicity and threaten the surrounding water through widespread and multiple sources of leakage out of the mine area.
What is SAUMA’s primary demand to the government?
SAUMA advocates for a total "no-mining" declaration for the Stampriet Basin - a declared Water Protection Area - due to its sensitive nature. We demand that long-term sustainability and water security for 80,000 people and our national food security and employment for more than 13,000 people be prioritized over short-term mining profits.
How can I help protect our water?
You can join SAUMA as a member (membership is free) or donate to our legal fund. Public mobilization and financial support for independent scientific and legal challenges emphasising the safeguards of our Water Act and Constitution are our strongest defenses against this impending disaster.
